Artesunate is a rapid insecticide for Plasmodium vivax intraerythrocyticus and is effective against Plasmodium falciparum with chloroquine. It can rapidly control the acute attack of malaria after administration. It is used for the rescue of dangerous malaria such as cerebral type and jaundice type and the treatment of falciparum malaria.

1.It is a derivative of artemisinin with sesquiterpene lactone structure. It has stronger effect on Plasmodium than artemisinin and is also effective against antichloroquine strains. It has a strong killing effect on the asexual body of Plasmodium, and is fast-acting and can rapidly control malaria attacks. It is particularly effective against cerebral malaria, which can rapidly control malaria attacks, but is ineffective against gametes of P. falciparum. It is clinically applicable to the rescue of acute malaria patients in critical condition, and can be the first choice for the treatment of cerebral malaria and various kinds of patients with fatal malaria. However, high relapse rate is its disadvantage. No adverse reactions have been observed at the recommended therapeutic dose; a transient decrease in peripheral reticulocytes may occur if a high dose is used, which may return to normal after discontinuation of the drug. Use with caution in pregnant women within  months of gestation; further studies are needed to determine whether it is teratogenic.

2. Potential antitumor properties
Artesunate has significant tumor cell-killing effects and is not easily resistant to drug development. In recent years, scholars at home and abroad have found that artesunate can exert anti-tumor effects through various mechanisms such as inhibiting tumor cell proliferation and inducing tumor cell differentiation and apoptosis, regulating cellular signal transduction, inhibiting tumor vascularization, inhibiting tumor invasion and metastasis, sensitizing anti-tumor chemotherapeutic drugs and reversing drug resistance.
 

1.Clinical application
Artesunate has been clinically used for ten years. It is the only effective derivative of artemisinin that can be made into a water-soluble preparation, mainly acting on the asexual body of the intraerythrocytic stage of Plasmodium. It can kill Plasmodium in the intraerythrocytic stage and achieve antimalarial effect, thus it can be used for all kinds of malaria patients, especially for the treatment of patients with chloroquine-resistant and piperaquine resistant falciparum malaria and fatal cerebral malaria, with high antimalarial activity, fast fever reduction, short transfer time of protozoa and low toxic side effects. It is the drug of choice for the treatment of severe malaria.

2.Anti-parasitic
It has a strong killing effect on Plasmodium asexualis and can rapidly control malaria attacks. Artesunate is a semi-synthetic artemisinin derivative, which has been shown to be effective against parasites such as liver flukes and has also shown cytotoxic effects on different types of tumor cell lines.
