Vitamin K comes in three forms: phylloquinone, menaquinone, and menadione. Phylloquinone, or K1, is found in green leafy vegetables, and helps bones absorb and store calcium.
Vitamin K can be divided into two major categories, both of which are derivatives of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone. One category is fat-soluble vitamins, namely vitamin K1 extracted from green plants (such as alfalfa, spinach and other green leafy plants, etc.) and vitamin K2 extracted from microorganisms, which can also be synthesized by human intestinal bacteria (such as E. coli).
Vitamin K, which is needed in small amounts by humans but is highly deficient in newborns, is an important vitamin that promotes normal blood clotting and bone growth. Dark green vegetables and yogurt are easily available in the daily diet as vitamin K supplements. The human body needs very little vitamin K, but it is essential for maintaining normal blood clotting, reducing heavy bleeding during physiological periods, and preventing internal bleeding and hemorrhoids. People who have frequent nosebleeds should get more vitamin K from natural foods.
