Adenine (formerly known as vitamin B4) is a purine that has many different functions in biochemistry. In cellular respiration, it acts as an energy-rich adenosine triphosphate (ATP), as well as the cofactors nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). It also acts as a component of DNA and RNA in the process of protein biosynthesis.
Adenine is one of the four nucleobases that make up DNA and RNA molecules, with the chemical formula C5H5N5. It exists in the body mainly as adenine nucleotides. It is involved in the formation of many important intermediates such as ATP and NADP in the metabolic pathways in the body.
Foods containing more vitamin B4 are: animal offal, meat, soy products, shrimp, sardines, oysters, spinach, black fungus, squid, mushrooms, etc. Because vitamin B4 is heat-resistant, it is lost less during processing and cooking, and the content of vitamin B4 in food is almost unchanged when stored for a long time in a dry environment.
Vitamin B4 deficiency manifests itself in mental retardation, blood disorders, skin disorders, hypoglycemia, reduced immune function, allergies, and muscle weakness. It also leads to impaired fat metabolism, fat deposition in cells, hepatic steatosis, and impaired kidney concentration.
For medicinal applications, it can be used in leukopenia caused by tumor radiation therapy, tumor chemotherapy, psychotropic drugs and benzene poisoning because it is involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA and can promote leukocyte proliferation and increase the number of leukocytes, and is also seen in hyperthyroidism combined with leukopenia.
Adenine also helps to regulate heart rate, relieve fatigue, strengthen immune function, prevent the formation of free radicals, and participate in regulating blood sugar balance.
