Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid that is widely found in natural plants such as marigold, pumpkin and cabbage. Marigold is particularly rich in lutein, which is present as an ester of lutein with fatty acids. Lutein is used as a yellow pigment in various ingredients, such as functional foods and nutraceuticals, with well-known pharmacological effects and applications. Natural lutein esters are effective in reducing the incidence of age-related macular degeneration. Lutein ester powder is a free-flowing powder using microencapsulation technology and is widely used for food nutritional fortification, especially for dried food products with water.

1. 2. Prevention of age-related macular (ADM) uses
An important biological function of lutein is to protect the retina from UV damage. Age-related macular degeneration (ADM) is currently found globally to be a major blinding eye disease in people over the age of 65.
Natural lutein esters and zeaxanthin esters are ingested into the human body and hydrolyzed into free forms of lutein and zeaxanthin by the action of human lipase. They are deposited in high concentrations in the macula of human eyes, and can act as absorbers of near-ultraviolet blue light, driving protective effects by trapping free radicals, preventing or reducing oxidation and damage brought by free radicals to the retina, which can effectively reduce the incidence of ADM.
