Bifidobacterium longum is a Gram-positive, peroxidase-negative rod-shaped bacterium found in the human gastrointestinal tract and is one of the 32 species of the genus Bifidobacterium. It is a microaerobic anaerobic bacterium and is considered to be one of the earliest colonizing bacteria in the infant gastrointestinal tract. When grown on normal anaerobic media, Bifidobacterium longum forms white, shiny, convex colonies. Although Bifidobacterium longum is not significantly present in the adult gastrointestinal tract, it is considered part of the intestinal microbiota and its production of lactic acid is thought to prevent the growth of pathogenic organisms. Bifidobacterium longum is non-pathogenic and is usually added to foods.

  1. 1. Relieve intestinal diseases
    Bifidobacterium longum can alleviate the symptoms of colitis and relieve chronic inflammation. However, the mechanisms by which Bifidobacterium longum treats inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and modulates the intestinal immune system remain unclear. In this review, we will focus on cellular and animal experiments and clinical trials to summarize the mechanisms of Bifidobacterium longum for the prevention and treatment of IBD for subsequent therapeutic applications.

    Bifidobacteria can secrete a variety of active metabolites. They affect the interactions between digestive, endocrine, cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems to maintain the host in a healthy state. Bifidobacterium longum suppresses inflammation by regulating the balance of the immune system, improving intestinal barrier function and increasing acetate production. This species is widely used as a probiotic because of its beneficial effects on host health and has been recognized as safe by the FDA and EFSA.

    As a versatile probiotic, Bifidobacterium longum is capable of surviving the harsh conditions of the intestinal tract. Unlike some probiotics, it is unaffected by stomach acid, bile, pH fluctuations or passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Instead, it supports the intestinal tract by adhering to the lining of the intestine all the way to the colon. Bifidobacterium longum strains are most common in infants and children, usually after transmission from the mother during natural delivery and breastfeeding. Children delivered by cesarean section or fed on formula may be deficient in this important bacterium. In such cases, supplementation is highly recommended, as colonization with Bifidobacterium longum can play an important role in the development of the gastrointestinal system for the rest of life.

    Studies have shown that Bifidobacterium longum has a powerful effect on the immune system, helping to strengthen the body's defenses against harmful pathogens. In infants, Bifidobacterium longum has been shown to activate anti-polio virus responses and improve their resistance to respiratory infections. Bifidobacterium longum is particularly important in the elderly, where there is evidence that it can boost the immune system.
    When tested in mice infected with influenza, Bifidobacterium longum was found to improve symptoms and reduce mortality, as well as reduce lower respiratory tract inflammation.

    Added to fresh milk tofu and pineapple juice. Microencapsulated Bifidobacterium longum, bacterial survival was assessed after continuous exposure to simulated gastric and intestinal fluids and refrigeration. Food products containing extracts and oligosaccharide extracts of microencapsulated Bifidobacterium longum exhibited better survival than free cells under unfavorable conditions. Sensory analysis showed that products containing co-encapsulated bacterial cells were more acceptable to consumers than free cells. Pineapple juice prepared with co-encapsulated cells had lower over-acidification values compared to juice with free cells added.

    2. In the field of digestive medicine.
