Bitterophylline (Theacrine,1,3,7,9-tetramethyluronic acid) is a purine alkaloid found in the leaves of wild bitter tea (CamelliakuchaHungT.Chang), whose molecular structure has one more methyl group, which is common in tea leaves. It is because of the one more methyl group  bitter tea alkaloids have very different physiological functions and health effects, which has attracted extensive attention from scholars in the academic and pharmaceutical fields.
