Ritonavir is an antiretroviral drug used with other drugs to treat HIV/AIDS. this combination therapy is called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor that can be used in combination with other protease inhibitors. However, it is usually used to inhibit the enzyme that metabolizes other protease inhibitors. It can also be used in combination with other drugs to treat hepatitis C. Oral ritonavir tablets are not bioequivalent to capsules because the tablets may result in higher peak plasma concentrations. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and numbness in the hands and feet. Serious side effects include liver problems, pancreatitis, allergic reactions, and cardiac arrhythmias, and serious interactions may occur with many other drugs, including amiodarone and simvastatin. Low doses are considered acceptable for use during pregnancy.

2. Protease inhibitors
Because of the metabolic side effects of ritonavir, lipid-lowering drugs may also be used with protease inhibitors to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Other serious adverse reactions are pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, renal failure, hypersensitivity reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis relaxation (TEN), hepatotoxicity, leukopenia, and neutropenia.
