Arctostemonoside (AR) is a phenol propane dibenzyl butyrolactone lignan first found in burdock seed ( A lappa ), a popular herb and nutraceutical often used in Asia, especially in China, Korea and Japan, for anti-influenza treatment.AR exhibits potent anti-inflammatory activity by modulating several cytokines to inhibit inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Due to its potent anti-inflammatory effects, AR can be used as a potential therapeutic compound to combat acute inflammation and various chronic diseases.



1.Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuronal protective activities of burdock sapogenins.
Burdock sapogenins ameliorate behavioral changes and dopamine (DA) neuronal damage in Parkinson's (PD) rats. The oxidative stress and inflammation involved in PD pathogenesis and burdock sapogenins may protect DA neurons through their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Burdock sapogenins have been reported to be used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).

2.May help with diabetes
Burdock root may improve diabetes by lowering blood sugar, improving glucose tolerance and preventing pancreatic cell death.Long-term oral administration of burdock sapogenins can lower blood sugar and improve lipid metabolism.

3.Improves athletic performance, endurance and fatigue
Burdock sapogenins may help reduce oxidative stress, decrease muscle damage and improve athletic performance. In several studies, burdock and its bioactive components have been shown to improve physical performance/endurance, reduce physiological fatigue, and improve grip strength. For example, burdock sapogenins increase exercise endurance by increasing antioxidant levels in muscles and reducing exercise-induced fatigue. Burdock sapogenins also reduce muscle levels of lactate, ammonia, creatine kinase (CK) and BUN, and may reduce fatigue by increasing the ability of dopamine in the brain.

2.Anti-viral and anti-cancer. Burdock sapogenins increase cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and block cellular energy metabolism in glucose-starved tumor cells. Burdock sapogenins were combined with the glucose analogue 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) and their effects on tumor cell growth were examined. The combination of burdock sapogenins and 2DG may represent a promising new cancer therapy.

3. The use of burdock sapogenins in the formulation of drugs for the prevention or treatment of diseases associated with hemocytopenia, and preparations containing burdock sapogenins, especially microemulsions containing burdock sapogenins. Experiments have shown that burdock sapogenins significantly increase the white blood cell count, especially neutrophil count, after chemotherapy.
