  The main component of pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt is pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), which is a new cofactor with similar physiological functions as vitamins and is widely found in prokaryotes, plants and mammals, such as fermented soy or natto, green pepper, kiwi, parsley, tea, papaya, spinach, celery, breast milk, etc.

4. The role of PQQ:
            
4.1. Growth Promoting Factors:

Poor mitochondrial health is associated with a variety of common diseases, including mental decline, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Controlled studies in mice fed with PQQ have shown that PQQ not only promotes mitochondrial growth, but also enables mitochondrial biosynthesis of active substances to extend life, prevent active oxidation and improve energy utilization. And in human cell assays, PQQ stimulated DNA synthesis, replication and cell division in human fibroblasts when PQQ concentrations were low.

Researchers suggest that enhanced mitochondrial health may be behind many of PQQ's health effects, such as improved energy, memory and sleep.

4.2. Neuroprotection:

In tests examining the relationship between PQQ and stroke and spinal cord injury, it was found that PQQ reduced neuronal cell death while effectively promoting functional recovery after spinal cord hemisection injury in rats. pQQ significantly reversed the decrease in Bax/Bcl-2 values caused by β-amyloid aggregation and inhibited caspase-3 cleavage. pQQ inhibited amyloid formation and inhibited PQQ inhibited the cytotoxicity of truncated α-synuclein and protected neuronal cells from the toxicity of β-amyloid aggregation.

4.3. Antioxidant.

The antioxidant effect of PQQ was clearly observed in experiments with PQQ-fed animals. It was found that PQQ inhibited the formation of peroxynitrite, prevented SIN-1-induced ATP depletion, and scavenged superoxide anion to avoid nitration of bovine serum albumin. In addition, PQQ prevented the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine from producing reactive oxygen species and reduced the cytotoxicity of 6-hydroxydopamine.
